Team Malaria illustrates how researchers are trying to understand how our immune system, particularly our B cells, react when infected with malaria. B cells can attack immediately, B-Man or access the situation, Memory B.

THE SCIENCE | HARRY SUTTON

Harry is an immunologist who looks at how B cells respond to plasmodium infection, which is the parasite that causes malaria. After B cells come into contact with pathogens, they can adopt a number of different “fates”. Some fates are important in immediately fighting off disease while others are necessary for generating long lasting immunity. Understanding how a B cell decides on which “fate” it will become will hopefully lead to designing more optimal vaccines for diseases such as malaria.

THE ART | CLARIE LOUSIE

Claire has depicted two different B cell “fates”, B-Man who attacks malaria immediately and Memory B who accesses the situation to help ensure long lasting protection.
