THE SCIENCE | ELIZA ROKHAST

Eliza is a chemist researching new nanomaterials—such as the layers of tungsten disulfide (WS₂) seen here. These are 100,000 times thinner than a human hair and display some peculiar defects. We often think of a defect as something bad, but by controlling where and how these flaws occur we can alter the properties of the material, such as how it glows. Better understanding these nanolayers and nanomaterials like them will be crucial in creating flexible electronics, high storage batteries, new encryption systems and even the next generation of renewable energy technologies.

THE ART | GLEN DOWNEY

After discovering a mutual appreciation with Eliza for throwing on some deep house in the workplace Glen has used a minimalist aesthetic inspired by the genre to represent Eliza’s process in the lab. The immediately beautiful geometry of the WS₂ nanomaterial that Eliza works with was an obvious feature to centre the design around.
Using the colours present in fluorescence imaging of the material, the graphic shows the subtle variations in each iteration beside a stylised extreme closeup of the crystalline structure of the material itself. Icons representing the potential the material has for the improvement of different technologies run along the bottom with a stylised illustration of the furnace used to synthesise the material. These combine with descriptive typographic elements to complete the deep house minimalist look.
The back print, combined with a striking pocket print based on the same triangular geometry of the WS₂ material, gives the shirt the immediate sense that it may be from a particular brand or event that will hopefully invite questions of the wearer and a likely surprising discussion about the process and potential of WS₂ nanomaterials.

  • OUR SHIRTS

We produce high quality shirts so you can wear them everyday and spark all of those science-ey conversations.

Our shirts are made from a mid weight, 180 GSM, 100% combed cotton (aka a great shirt). They are also preshrunk to minimise shrinkage (phew).

Shirts are sourced through AS Colour as they have high quality products and transparent ethical processes, see here.

To minimise our enviromental impact our shirts are printed on demand with water-based inks and are shipped in home-compostable packaging (yay compost!).

  • SHIPPING & RETURNS

All shirts are printed and shipped from Melbourne within 14 days of ordering.

    Aus/ NZ Shipping: $10

    Everywhere else: $20

You can return your shirt up to 30 days after purchase. Simply send the product back to us in the condition it was received for a new size or store credit.

Sometimes mistakes happen so if your shirt isn't what you expected let us know and we can send you the right shirt.

  • OUR CHANGE MAKERS

Shirty Science wants to change the world one shirt at a time.

We use our profits to help organisations that are supporting diversity in STEM. We do this the only way we know how – making shirts!

You can see all our Change Maker shirts here. All profits from the sale of these shirts go directly to the organisation the shirt is about.

Are you part of a Change Maker organisation? Would you like a shirt? Let us know here.
