Galactic Blooms explores the parallels between the astrophysics that the GLEAM survey explores, and the unique native desert blooms of Western Australia that spring up beneath and around its parent telescope, the Murchison Widefield Array.

THE SCIENCE | DR NATASHA HURLEY-WALKER

The Murchison region of outback Western Australia hosts one of the most pristine and quiet radio observatories in the world, where telescopes such as the Murchison Widefield Array observe the Universe. One of its biggest projects was the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) survey, from which Natasha and fellow astronomers created a map of the Southern sky across multiple radio frequencies — enough that for the first time, astronomers could see the sky in radio colour. This has given astronomers all over the world a better understanding of many different astrophysical objects, such as supermassive black holes at the hearts of distant galaxies, clusters of galaxies colliding together, and the remains of exploded stars.

Check out the GLEAM survey at gleamoscope.icrar.org, or on your phone via the GLEAM and GLEAM VR apps on the Apple or Google Play stores.

Natasha is a researcher at Curtin University, International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

THE ART | BEC ADAMCZEWSKI

Wreath flowers, everlasting daisies, and wildflowers dance through the sky as galaxies, pulsars, and supernovas. Bec was inspired by Natasha’s radio astronomy images to create an artwork that celebrates the beautiful explosions of colour and the incredible landscape that the radio telescopes observe from.

This artwork explores the parallels between the astrophysics that the GLEAM survey explores, and the unique native desert blooms of Western Australia that spring up beneath and around its parent telescope, the Murchison Widefield Array.

Just like the Universe, what at first seems like a sparse landscape, barren and silent, actually holds hidden secrets of blooms of colour.

  • OUR CHANGE MAKERS

Shirty Science wants to change the world one shirt at a time.

We use our profits to help organisations that are supporting diversity in STEM. We do this the only way we know how – making shirts!

You can see all our Change Maker shirts here. All profits from the sale of these shirts go directly to the organisation the shirt is about.

Are you part of a Change Maker organisation? Would you like a shirt? Let us know here.
